IDEA:
Add support for offline files.
(Just copy file and store them locally make a mess on your laptop and doesn't show you what needs to be sent back to Project Place.)
WHY:
To make project available offline when on the move (airplane/customer visits)
How:
similar to Subversion used for software development for instance, NOTas offline folders in windows.
The user will choose a folder in the document tree, that folder and below should be synchronized to a local storage (i.e. on a laptop).
Each file and folder should show:
-a status wether it is synchornised or not,
-wether it contains new/updated information and need synchronisation.
-Wether it conatians outdated information (someone else have changed documents on the server).
Benefits:
-The status update will require internet access, but will required low bandwidth.
-The content synchronisation will require high bandwidth to copy files (preferably on bit-level and not file level alone).
Optional:
Add merge capabilities to compare documents that has been changed both on the server and locally at the same time.
Hi Jakob,
Thanks! We have had this idea previously and if it gets enough votes we will discuss it for development.
Ideas with status Business Case require a bit more development and might affect several parts of the system. These will therefore have to be prioritised against other new development. The way we do this is by writing a business case for the development and then discussing the prioritisation of the business cases. We write business cases for the top ideas with this status.
Best regards,
Karolina
This should be the top idea on this site! It would be a huge improvement for Projectplace.
This could also reduce the criticality of the office internet connection and therefore be an order winner also for companies that does not travel every day. Much money is saved by not having to have redundant Internet connections.
Karolina, could you link to the dupe idea so that we can vote for it there aswell? I can't seem to find this idea expressed in such a good way.
Hi,
Is offline synch getting developed? If so when is it likely to go Live? You could also provide a WebDAV or FTP interface. The problem is like most organisations there are normally 3 places you store files; locally, in the cloud i.e. PP aswell as a company file share. They all get out of sync and no one knows where anything is and it becomes a chore to keep up to date.
Cheers,
Si

What we have recently done is open up API:s for document management and other parts of the system if you would like to try your hands at building this functionality yourselves. We have no plans to develop this in the short term as we are currently very busy with improvements in planning.
Best regards,
Karolina
I like Jakob's idea. In fact, the lack of automated "synchronization" is one of the major barriers to making ProjectPlace truly useful. When working at a client site, I mostly do NOT have internet connection, which means I download the entire project folder, to make sure I have all the files I need. I then have to manually keep track of the files I changed, and upload those when I get back. Easy to miss something, and in the end it creates a barrier to storing files on ProjectPlace, which in turn may defeat the purpose of having a shared file repository.
