In our organisation the document version is a part of the document/file name, ie every new version of a document has a slightly different filename. As PP does not detect this automatically - being able to change a document's name in the New version-form directly when uploading a new version would save time and lessen the risk that you forget to do it.

Assuming documents are only accessed from within ProjectPlace, it is bad practice to include any sort of version information in the file name.
Unless there is a need to store historic versions outside of ProjectPlace I would avoid doing this as it causes all the usual version control headaches by users not knowing which is the latest version etc...
A better location for company version information is in the 'Change Description' field under the Version History.
